COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

İÇTY 111 Modularity in Nature and Art

The course is composed of subjects of modularity and its origins in architecture, particularly modularity in architecture, in the philosophy of antiquity, in botany, in zoology, in the human body and in art, as well as the golden ratio, golden rectangle, standardization of modern architecture.
 

İÇTY 112 Design in Industrialization Process

In this course, design problems resulted in industrialization process, the discourses during the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe, establishment of design schools, the German Business Association Meetings, Bauhaus; the purpose of the establishment, the philosophy of education and curriculum, the new approaches of the Bauhaus and today’s design issues are discussed.
 

İÇTY 113 Formation of Space in Traditional Turkish House

Functions and definitions of cellar, “aşhane”, pantry, “hayat”, patio, room, sofa, wardrobe, “gusülhane”, cooker in traditional Turkish Houses are examined and their regional differences are analyzed.
 

İÇTY 115 Scientific Research Methods

The aim of the course is to obtain the research methods and the techniques in both course and thesis studies. The research studies are based on to exercise the methods and spelling rules which are consisted of the use of sources, footnotes, reference systems, proposals, hypothesis, analysis, and conclusion. Therefore, the students are gained the methodological knowledge to guide to their thesis.
 

İÇTY 116 Reality and Virtuality in Design

Today, design no longer seems to be a real product, as a representative, factors that shape the environment perceived as unnatural and an imaginary existential are explored. Investigating the identity created by the produced design, the relationship between revealed communication style and design are examined. In this relationship, product, the main theme, communication, evolving environment and factors ranging from art space created by the environment are discussed. In this course, how much is real and reflected image or occurrence of an artistic and poetic situation of the relationship between function and represent are shown with related works.
 

İÇTY 117 Design and Communication

Today, communication, so the interaction is developing rapidly, the effort to create an effective visual image plays an active role in design. In this course, communication and theories used in design, theories and methods are discussed with examples in order to understand the formation of the language of design. Interdisciplinary semantic studies and emerging trends in contemporary designs are investigated in order to understand and interpret the formation of the communicative criteria in design. Design language created by cultural codes, design and communication criteria are researched by semantic analysis. The ways that culture and/or image transmitted to design are resolved.
 

İÇTY 119 Social Change, City and Architecture

The purpose of the course is to examine the (trans)formation in city and in architecture within its historical framework consisting of social alterations. Urban change and architectural trends in Turkey and the West are investigated in the prehistoric and ancient era, feudal society, industrial society, modernist and postmodernist periods on the basis of social structure and social change. The reading list is given and is supported by visual and theoretical materials. The course helps to establish the relationship between development in the field of urban and architecture and social change that contributes to the interpretation of today's design process.
 

İÇTY 120 Housing and Culture

The intend of the course is to consider the relationship between housing and identity on the basis of culture and housing association. The reflection of culture to structure of houses and the impact of housing on cultural change are examined. Relationship between housing-culture and identity are investigated with the studies conducted with the inhabitants of different houses (traditional housing in different settlements, squatters and high blocks). The course creates a ground in spatial designs with the examination of the link between housing and culture within a wide spectrum.
 

İÇTY 123 The Theory of Building Acoustics

In the course, theoretical information such as noise control, environmental scale, the construction scale, design and criteria for noise control, volume, acoustics, intelligibility, the geometric method, radiation method, homogeneous sound distribution, statistical method, the sound energy of the swallow, reverberation time, acoustic design of the volume are explicated.
 

İÇTY 133 Cultural Heritage Management

In the course, the framework of theoretical and practical aspects of cultural heritage management is examined within the perspective of Turkey's art history, architectural history, archeology and cultural history. The relation with cultural heritage protection and the economy are discussed in the light of UNESCO's cultural heritage conventions. Cultural creativity is the fastest growing sector in Europe. The phenomenon of cultural heritage in the European Union recognizes in the context of the cultural economy. In addition, art, museums, interior design are the most important topics. Thus, it is possible to preserve and to develop the cultural heritage. It is very essential to protect and to evaluate and to transform it into a product is seen as creative sector in cultural economy. Cultural heritage is accepted as a design memory for cultural industries. In this course, the balance of preservation and usage is investigated for the sake of sustainability. The samples from Turkey and the from world are discussed from the context of interior architecture and environmental design such as the problems of historical cities, traditional settlements, the use of ancient theaters for events, reuse of some buildings such as agora, khans, caravansaries, baths, cultural heritage, museums, exhibitions, presentation techniques etc.
